Wilderness therapy - Expeditions

Also known as outdoor behavioral healthcare, is a type of therapy that uses outdoor settings and wilderness experiences to help individuals who are struggling with mental health issues or behavioral problems. This type of therapy typically involves a combination of adventure activities, such as hiking, camping, and rock climbing, with group therapy sessions led by licensed mental health professionals.

The psychology behind wilderness therapy is based on:

  1. The therapeutic benefits of nature: Research has shown that spending time in nature can have a positive impact on mental health, including reducing stress, improving mood, and increasing feelings of well-being.

  2. Experiential learning: Wilderness therapy is often structured around experiential learning, which is the process of learning by doing. By engaging in outdoor activities, individuals are given the opportunity to learn new skills, overcome challenges, and develop a sense of accomplishment, all of which can improve their self-esteem and self-efficacy.

  3. Group therapy: The group therapy sessions that take place during wilderness therapy are designed to provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals to share their experiences, thoughts, and feelings with others who are going through similar challenges. Group therapy can help individuals build social connections, improve communication skills, and develop a sense of community and build awareness.

  4. Many of our wilderness therapy programs incorporate therapies that help individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to their mental health issues. By working with a therapist to challenge negative beliefs and develop more positive coping strategies, individuals can learn to manage their symptoms and improve their overall well-being.

Overall, the goal of wilderness therapy is to provide individuals with a transformative experience that can help them gain a deeper understanding of themselves, develop new coping skills, and build a foundation for lasting change.

Our next program is called Bhramatal/Bhagirati Expedition - in December 2023.
